Local Farmers Bring Harvest to Flushing -

This summer, GrowNYC’s Flushing Greenmarket returns to Maple Playground for its fourth season.

The Flushing Greenmarket is one of 50 that GrowNYC operates as part of a mission to provide all New Yorkers with convenient access to fresh, healthy, and locally-produced food, while promoting regional agriculture by supplying a marketplace in the City for family farms. Every farmer and producer who sells at a Greenmarket must adhere to GrowNYC’s comprehensive requirements for the program’s eligibility. Chiefly, those who sell at a market must produce their food in the region (roughly within 250 miles of New York City), have full command of their production, and maintain traceability for Greenmarket’s inspection team.

This season, R&G Produce, a family-owned and operated produce farm from the Black Dirt Region of Goshen, New York, will come out to Flushing every Wednesday from July 3rd until November 27th with a robust assortment of rich soil from Orange County.

“It’s wonderful to bring our Greenmarket back to Maple Playground for a fourth year,” said Michael Hurwitz, Director of GrowNYC’s Greenmarket program. “We treasure our relationship with the community and know that Flushing residents appreciate regional farmers bringing healthy and fresh food straight to their neighborhood.”

Flushing Greenmarket shoppers can pick up free healthy recipes at the Market Information Tent, as well as participate in family friendly activities. In addition, the New York City Department of Health’s Stellar Markets program is on hand every week to provide shoppers with nutritional education and lead cooking demonstrations in English, Spanish, and Chinese.

GrowNYC Greenmarkets are located in a variety of spaces, from park plazas to sidewalks to ferry terminals. Regardless of where they are located, Greenmarkets are gathering places. Neighbors come together not only to buy fresh food, but also to mingle and check in on each other. It creates a feeling of belonging. The composition of the many Greenmarket communities throughout the City reflects the invigorating diversity of New York City itself.
