The Fabric of Cultures: Systems in the Making

The Fabric of Cultures: Systems in the Making is a multimedia exhibition bringing together artists, designers, CUNY students and local communities to reflect on the art of making, craftsmanship and technology in today’s globalized world. The exhibition calls attention to larger systems at play that influence the state of fashion, craft and aesthetics constantly under development and in flux. Many of today’s Italian designers link their collections to the places in which they were made, emphasizing the importance of tradition and local culture. The designers and companies included in the exhibition: Cesare Attolini, Antonio Marras, Orange Fiber and Salvatore Ferragamo, “Arte e Ricamo,” a women-run company that works for prestigious Italian and international brands from Emilio Pucci (shown in the exhibit) to Dolce & Gabbana, Tom Ford, Versace, Vivienne Westwood, and Fendi. The exhibition is curated by Eugenia Paulicelli, Professor of Italian at Queens College.

The Fabric of Cultures: Systems in the Making is on view through December 15, 2017 at Queens College Art Center (Benjamin S. Rosenthal Library, 6th Floor), 65-30 Kissena Blvd.

Design Faculty at Queens College

This fabulous exhibition at the Godwin-Ternbach Museum explores the vast creativity of the award-winning Design faculty at Queens College. A range of fascinating works from animation, illustration, typography, interaction design, communication design and fine art is on display.

Queens: Envisioning Habitats

This exhibition pairs six Queens-based Korean American artists with six artists from outside the borough, to create new dialogues and perspectives. With Queens as the base habitat, local artists share and exchange diverse points of view with the other artists. The works are inspired by nature, Korean traditional folk painting, and memories. The resulting effect is a show highlighting beautifully nuanced installations and expressive, contemplative works of art. The exhibition is curated by Flushing Town Hall’s Teaching Artist Stephanie S. Lee.

Borderlines | Shahryar Shahamat

Through his paintings in Borderlines, Iranian-born artist Shahryar Shahamat shares his experience—boundaries and challenges—as an artist and resident of New York City for the past seven years. From the age of 18, he worked alongside well-known filmmakers and theatre directors in Iran. Apart from video editing and directing, Shahamat continued painting and drawing after his move to New York in 2011. For this exhibition,Shahamat had created site-specific, life-sized paintings, inspired by the ambiance of the Garden.

Borderlines is on view through December 31, 2017 at the Queens Botanical Garden, 43-50 Main Street, Flushing.

Elizabeth Korn: Her American Half-Life

The 1930s brought a remarkable group of German refugees to the United States whose contributions were to shape the cultural and scientific life of mid-20th century America. This exhibition focuses on one artist, Elizabeth Korn (1900 – 1979) who fled Nazi Germany with her family. Settling in Jersey City, she continued to work as a portraitist and illustrator, joining the faculty at Drew University in New Jersey in the 1940s. During her time at Drew and after her retirement, Elizabeth painted in a number of styles ranging from abstract to works referencing classical motifs. Today, her art has been featured in solo exhibitions in Europe and New York galleries. Curated by Larry Qualls, this exhibition features a number of Korn’s works on loan from private collections. Exhibition-related events include a performance of music by Kurt Weil, scheduled for March 18, 2018.

The Sport of Kings in Queens: Celebrating 350 Years of Thoroughbred Horse Racing

King Charles II of Great Britain, upon seizing New Netherland from the Dutch, promptly renamed it the Province of New York. An avid breeder, owner, and racer of thoroughbred horses, Charles established the first official race course in 1667 in Queens, Province of New York. This exhibition relates the remarkable history of thoroughbred horse racing in Queens and is co-located at Flushing Town Hall’s Greenroom and the Queens Historical Society.

The Sport of Kings in Queens is on view through June 30, 2018. It is co-located at Flushing Town Hall’s Greenroom at 137-35 Northern Blvd, Flushing and the Queens Historical Society at 143-35 37th Avenue, Flushing, NY.
